Second, you will need to decide whether you want to install TeXLive just for yourself or for all users (assuming you can do that). (There are also some other options.)įirst, download the TeXLive Windows installer from this page. The process we describe here is based upon an internet installation, but the process should work, with some changes, for DVD-based installations, as well. As a result, the bundled installer was discontinued, and this page was created to help older users transition to TeXLive, and to help new users to install it for the first time.įor users with a reliable and reasonable fast internet connection, the easiest way to install TeXLive is over the internet. But, in 2018, there were two major MiKTeX bugs that caused many users not to be able to compile LaTeX documents at all, which caused LyX essentially to stop working for those users (specifically, to be unable to export PDFs). For a long time, MiKTeX was something like the semi-official choice, since there was a 'bundled' installer that installed MiKTeX along with LyX. For Windows there are two main choices: MiKTeX and TeXLive.

To use LyX as a 'LaTeX frontend', you need to install a 'TeX distribution', preferably before installing LyX itself.
